Cry Ohana Review

In April 1972, in Honolulu, Hawaii, Hank and Malia Pualoa spent the day picnicking with three other families at a Hawaiian waterfront park. Normally a loving couple, late in the afternoon they got into an argument when Malia wanted to get their two children home before the weather became a problem. Although he had been drinking, the family loaded up the car and headed for home as rain began to fall. Just a couple of blocks from the park, Hank ran a red light and in the ensuing tangle of vehicles at the busy intersection, a truck t-boned the car killing Hank’s beloved wife.

Hank spent six months in jail for the death of his wife. Rather than disrupt the lives of his children who were living with their maternal grandmother, Hank decided to go to the mainland leaving his children under the supervision of their Uncle John, a partner in Hank’s construction business.

The novel picks up ten years later in November 1982 when Hank’s now twelve-year-old son Kekoa witnesses the tragic death of his Uncle John and has to go on the run from the murderer. The authors continue to follow Kekoa’s life, the adventures he experiences, and the people he meets.

They alternate his story with his sister Leilani’s which is picked up twelve years after the death of their mother as she is attending her grandmother’s funeral. Leilani is left on her own after the disappearance of her Uncle John. She is sent to live with a family she has never met so that she can continue to attend school.

While Leilani is living in the lap of luxury, Kekoa is still on the run from the man who murdered his uncle. As Kekoa tries to make a new life for himself, he receives unexpected help from strangers including a police investigator and a stranger who remains in the shadows. Will his desire to reunite his family ever come to pass? Will he live long enough to once again see his sister? These questions and more are answered in the fast-paced action-packed adventure story as it unfolds with the beautiful Hawaiian Islands as a backdrop.

Cry Ohana was written by husband and wife team Rosemary and Larry Mild. They are the authors of the popular Paco and Molly Mystery Series. The beautiful setting, engaging characters, and lively plot combine to bring readers a story that is literally difficult to put down. The 405-page novel deftly moves between the characters and their stories concluding with a satisfying finish. It is an engaging story of tragedy, hope, and unconditional love.
