Chord Progressions - When You Say Nothin' at All

In this little series we're having a look at some popular chord progressions which are used over and over (and over) again in many popular tunes and songs. If you missed out and would like to start from the beginning here's a handy link to follow. Popular Chord Progressions #1

Ronan Keating's first solo hit "When You Say Nothin' At All" was released a month after he split from Boyzone back in '99. It hit the number 1 spot and stayed for 2 weeks, greatly aided by its use in the British romantic comedy Notting Hill.

When You Say Nothin' At All was written by two Music Row writers Paul Overstreet and Don Schlitz, and it was originally a hit for late country singer Keith Whitley. Singer Alison Krauss also covered it in a country style version for a Whitley tribute album in 1994. She changed the key to Eb to suit her voice.

The main part of the song is quite simple to play and consists of just 4 chords - although it does break into the key of E for a very Irish style musical break before returning back to G  until the fade out.

I played a few years back in Mallorca in an Irish bar ... Hi to Jim and the lads ... and we often opened up with this number. We rocked it up ever so slightly, and it always went down very well.

If you would like to learn all of the chord families, you might be interested in following this link and checking out details of my e-book Basic Chord Families shown over there to the right - it's sub-title? Play 1000s of Songs With These Chords ... and that's true! More classics have been written with these families than you can shake a stick at! (That's musician technical speak that is :). Suitable for both guitar and keyboards.
