Dream Symbols - Maze, Labyrinth

The first mental image one may have of a maze might be a poor, frustrated rat running up and down the paths just to hit one wall after another in its attempts to get out. Are you feeling like the rat these days?

The labyrinth, also known as a maze, is a winding path that is often laid out as a spiral. As a sacred and spiritual tool, labyrinths date back to ancient times and seem to have been part of many cultures including Mayan, Celtic and Native American. A closer look at the art and spiritual symbols of these cultures reveals that the spiral is incorporated in their designs. The popularity of the labyrinth as a spiritual and meditative tool has been recently revived in New Age and Neopagan practices as well as others. The purpose of walking the labyrinth is to clear the mind and untangle the mysteries of life and the inner self. The practice teaches us to see life as a spiritual path that involves many twists and turns and sometimes brings us back to the beginning.

As a dream symbol, the labyrinth represents the journey into the unconscious. Your dream may be reminding you that you must untangle the maze in order to clear the path to self-knowledge and inner wisdom. How comfortable are you walking your path?

If you dream of being trapped in a maze, you may be feeling like you're running up against walls in life. Try to identify those obstacles and think of ways to work through them. Are you using the same methods that don't work over and over again? You may need to change your beliefs and expectations in order to make changes. An excellent - and entertaining - tool to assist you with this is Spencer Johnson, M.D.'s classic Who Moved My Cheese?.

May all your dreams come true!
