Hair for Hippy Costume

So you are going to a Halloween party dressed as a hippy. This is one of the easiest costumes to throw together at the last minute. All you need is a pair of bell-bottom jeans and a T-shirt. Beads are a good touch and a flower or two – one for your hair and one to give away.

If your hair is long, you are all set. The hippy mind set was to be completely natural. The hippy lifestyle anything that was the reverse of what had been the conventional way of life. Hair was no exception. Up until this time, women had been styling their hair. It had to be ‘done’ at all times. Setting lotions, hairspray, and curlers were used to create the perfect hairstyle and to keep every hair in place as long as possible.

The hippy threw away all of the signs of the conventional styling procedures. Their hair was clean and free. Many washed their hair everyday for the first time in history. The way their hair grew out of their head was the way it stayed. Traditional haircuts were grown out. Bangs were done away with.

Long and very straight hair was the dream of every hippy girl but if they happened to have curly hair, they let it go natural in Janis Joplin style. There were no gels or serums used to tame down the curl so it was often very wild and frizzy looking. Long curly hair almost always had to be controlled with a headband.
In this illustration, the look is easy. Wash and condition your hair, part it in the center and let it dry If you have bangs, part them in the middle and comb each side into the rest of the hair to conceal it as much as possible.
For control: It was permissible and very hippy stylish to wear a headband. These were either made of leather strings (leather boot laces worked very well) that were tied on the side or in the back. A beaded Indian headband was the height of the fashion. Headbands helped to control their hair from flying in the wind.
Another acceptable way of controlling fly-away hair was the two pony tail look. The pony tails were secured below the ear on each side and worn in front of the shoulders. They could be secured with a covered rubber band or just tied with leather strings. If your hair won’t stay with just the strings, use a rubber band and cover it with the leather strings.
