Airstones for Fish Tanks

What is an airstone and how do you use it? It comes in various shapes and its basic purpose is to aerate the aquarium or fish tank water for your fish and live plants you may have in your aquarium. It’s a porous blue stone and is attached to rubber tubing and a pump that you plug into a power source.

This device can work together with a filtration system or on its own. It helps your filtration system be more efficient. They can come in ceramic or stone although these clog after about 6 months. They also come in wood and are usually used in saltwater tanks. Plastic ring-shaped ones last longer and can be cleaned and so used longer.

Airstones can also break up scum build-up on the surface of the water. Also, please be aware that they may also raise the pH of the water slightly.

Airstones provide fine air bubbles. This is quieter than large bubbles and puts more oxygen into your water so that you may have more fish in your tank.

Another advantage of having an airstone is the pleasing visual effect. You can decide how to landscape your aquarium after perusing various types of airstones. Your fish enjoy seeing the bubbles and playing in them, too.

Your water will be less stagnant with the airstone. It will create turbulence in the water and because of this, you must take into consideration the size of your tank and the type of fish in your tank. Fish with long, flowing fins, for example, do not like too much turbulence in the water.

Airstones can add efficiency and beauty to your fish tank; peruse some of the varieties below before making your final decision. It’s one more step toward a happy, healthy fish in the wonderful aquarium environment that you create.
