Review of Cloth Dolls by Brenda Brightmore

In the past few weeks I've received many questions about making different kinds of dolls. Some readers are looking fer patterns or instructions for making more realistic looking cloth baby dolls. A few readers are looking for a way to make more adult dolls; dolls not necessarily meant for young children to play with, but cloth dolls geared more toward the adult collector. Quite a few are looking for boy cloth dolls and clothing for them.

Well, the answer to all of these searches can be found in the book Cloth Dolls by Brenda Brightmore and many more! This book will not only inspire your own creativity, but you'll be itching to try all the techniques presented. You won't want to put it down, but you won't want to wait to start making cloth dolls of your own, either.

There are patterns for more than 10 different dolls and complete outfits for each, right down to the socks and shoes. Cloth Dolls is filled with beautiful color photos that will feed your soul, with lots of close-ups to clearly see the lovely details. The dolls range in size from 11 inches to 22 inches tall with most about 15 inches tall.

Cloth Dolls by Brenda Brightmore begins with a chapter of basic instructions which apply to all the dolls in the book, both on construction and painting the faces, called Making the Dolls. It is then divided into 3 sections. The first section, Calico Dolls, is 4 dolls made with woven fabric. The second section is Covered Needle Sculpture Dolls which are made with a base of woven cloth under the face and covered with knit fabric over the sculpting. Section three is Pure Needle Sculpture Dolls which have faces made with only knit fabric and needle sculpting. This technique results in dolls with more individualized and realistic looking facial features. You'll find lots of ideas for making boy dolls as well as girls, babies and even an adult cloth doll.

The book is printed on sturdy paper and the pattern pieces are very clear which makes them easy to trace onto regular white paper. The step by step instructions have nice drawings at each step. They are clear and simple to follow.

Even if you don't make any of the dolls, which would be a shame, you'll love the clothes. Make a complete new wardrobe for dolls you already have! Patterns are included for baby clothes, dresses, trousers and shirts, shoes, boots coats hats and bags.

This book belongs on every doll maker's bookshelf, but it won't spend much time on the shelf.
