Awards season is here! Tonight kicks it off with the 2009 Emmy Awards on CBS, and I’m looking forward to it more than I probably should. Neil Patrick Harris is a perfect choice of host, and I can’t wait to see what he does this evening. I shamelessly love award shows, from the fashion to the acceptance speeches and everything in between. Who will take home statues this year? Here are the nominees, along with my almost always incorrect predictions:
Lead Actor
Steve Carrell – Michael Scott, The Office
Jim Parsons – Sheldon Cooper, The Big Bang Theory
Tony Shaloub – Adrian Monk, Monk
Alec Baldwin – Jack Donaghy, 30 Rock
Jermaine Clement – Jermaine, Flight of the Conchords
Charlie Sheen – Charlie Harper, Two and a Half Men
Surprise nominees Jermaine Clement and Jim Parsons could upset this category with their hilarious performances in two awesomely great shows. I love Steve Carrell and Alec Baldwin, but it’s nice to see some fresh blood this year. I think Tony Shaloub’s wins year upon year have become a little tiring, as evidenced by the Baldwin nod last year. I don’t have much to say about Charlie Sheen because I’m not a fan of his show.
Should win – Jermaine Clement or Jim Parsons, with a slight bias for Clement because I adore him
Will win – The Emmys love 30 Rock. Alec Baldwin takes it.
Lead Actress
Julia Louis-Dreyfus – Christine, The New Adventures Of Old Christine
Christina Applegate – Samantha Newly, Samantha Who?
Sarah Silverman – Sarah Silverman, The Sarah Silverman Program
Tina Fey – Liz Lemon, 30 Rock
Toni Collette – Tara Gregson, United States of Tara
Mary-Louise Parker – Nancy Botwin, Weeds
I love seeing Sarah Silverman on this list, as well as the phenomenally talented Toni Collette. But Tina Fey is unstoppable, and sort of in a category all by herself.
Should win: Tina Fey
Will win: Tina Fey
Supporting Actor
Kevin Dillon – Johnny Drama, Entourage
Neil Patrick Harris – Barney Stinson, How I Met Your Mother
Rainn Wilson – Dwight Schrute, The Office
Tracy Morgan – Tracy Jordan, 30 Rock
Jack McBrayer – Kenneth Parcell, 30 Rock
John Cryer – Alan Harper, Two and a Half Men
This may be the toughest category, both in the Should and the Will. Even though Entourage has gone way downhill, Kevin Dillon always delivers. Neil Patrick Harris can do no wrong in my book, Rainn Wilson is consistently funny in my beloved Office, and McBrayer and Morgan bring it every week on 30 Rock. As much as I adore John Cryer, sadly I don’t think his show is funny.
Should win: So difficult. I hate to say it, but pretty much anyone besides John Cryer. Slight edge goes to Neil Patrick Harris, though.
Will win: I have no idea, which probably means John Cryer.
Supporting Actress
Kristin Chenoweth – Olive Snook, Pushing Daisies
Amy Poehler – Various Characters, Saturday Night Live
Kristen Wiig – Various Characters, Saturday Night Live
Jane Krakowski – Jenna Maroney, 30 Rock
Vanessa Williams – Wilhelmina Slater, Ugly Betty
Elizabeth Perkins – Celia Hodes, Weeds
This may come down to a battle of the women of SNL. I’m ruling out Vanessa Williams immediately, because I don’t think the recent seasons of Ugly Betty can really be categorized as comedy. Jane Krakowski is very funny, but Amy Poehler and Kristen Wiig have been the glue holding SNL together for the past couple years.
Should win: Amy Poehler or Kristen Wiig
Will win: Amy Poehler
Comedy Series
Entourage
Family Guy
Flight of the Conchords
How I Met Your Mother
The Office
30 Rock
Weeds
The nomination alone for Flight of the Conchords is almost enough for me. I’ve been in love with the show since it began, and it’s very satisfying to see it get some respect. As I mentioned earlier, Entourage started its descent from greatness as couple seasons ago, and I don’t think Family Guy should even be on the list. I’m fine with wins for any of the other shows.
Should win: For the simple fact that it came back from a lackluster season four into a stellar season five, my vote goes to The Office.
Will win: None of its seasons have sucked yet. 30 Rock wins.
I’ll be keeping my predictions handy when I’m watching tonight to see how I do!
