Self-talk is the internal commentary you have with yourself almost every waking minute. Those negative and positive words you say to yourself about your successes are lodging themselves deep in your unconscious mind. If you’re not achieving and/or enjoying success, then something you’re saying to yourself about success is reinforcing self-sabotage.
Usually, you talk to yourself for one of three reasons –
1. To control your actions or thoughts;
2. To inform;
3. Or, to judge the actions and beliefs of yourself or others.
Self-talk is what you say to yourself when something doesn’t go right.
Self-talk is what you say to yourself when you’ve achieved a long awaited goal.
Self-talk is what you say to yourself when someone is negative or critical about you or your work.
Self-talk is what you say to yourself when someone doesn’t live up to your expectations.
Self-talk is what you say to yourself when you don’t accomplish everything perfectly.
Self-talk is what you say to yourself when you’re late for an important date or appointment.
Self-talk is what you say to yourself when you’re happy and things are going well.
Self-talk is what you say to yourself when you’re complimented on a job well done.
Definition: Self-sabotaging behaviors are any behaviors that negatively keep you from living up to your highest potential. Negative self-talk is a self-sabotaging behavior.
To the self-saboteur, success is a major struggle. It’s an emotional tug-of-war between wanting to succeed and being afraid of living up to the expectations of success. The more you recognize what you are saying to yourself about yourself, the more you’ll understand if and why you may be self-sabotaging.
Recognizing and conquering self-sabotage begins with changing self-talk patterns. This can be done by: 1. Catching yourself saying something negative and immediately changing it to something positive. AND 2. Repeating positive affirmations to yourself to help reprogram negative self-talk into positive self-talk.
Self-talk has the power to control how you live your life. What you say to yourself becomes your reality. If you dwell on the negatives of success, you start to unconsciously reject success. How? Because your self-talk is programming your mind to see, feel, hear, believe and experience that success is uncomfortable and negative.
Do you see how self-sabotage can be triggered by the words you’re saying to yourself? By becoming more aware of your self-talk, you’re becoming more pro-active about conquering self-sabotage. Rule of thumb: Concentrate your emotional energy on what you are doing right, not on what you’re doing wrong.
