Book Review - Magic Carpets

If you are interested in latch-hooked or cross-stitched rugs, “Magic Carpets – 30 Easy to Make Rug Designs”, written by Melinda Coss and Sylvie Soudan in 1989, is a good informational book.

The book covers techniques for two different methods of latch hooking and explains how to cross stitch and continental stitch. It includes instructions for reading patterns, joining canvas, finishing, binding and adding fringe. Finishing and binding instructions explain how to finish a square, rectangle or circular rug. There is also information about selecting latch hooks, rug or tapestry needles, canvas, frames and yarn. This book is filled with lots of colored pictures and illustrations which do a great job of explaining each step and all thirty patterns were designed to finish either as latch hook or cross stitch.

Magic Carpets has 30 rug patterns. Designs include Aztec, Egyptian, Tartan, Popeye, a very cute polar bear skin rug, floral, Indian and a few rugs inspired by Art Deco, the 20’s, 30’s and the 50’s. My favorites are the High Society Rug and the polar bear rug complete with ears that stick up, just like a real bear skin. The rugs are designed in all different shapes and sizes.

Written in 1989, some of the colors and patterns are dated, but if you choose colors to complement your decor, most of the patterns will work well with today’s style. This book does not provide a large list of recommended resources. Latch hooks, rug or tapestry needles, canvas and binding are easy to find at your local craft and sewing stores. Frames and rug or tapestry wool are available through various places on the internet.

Latch hooking is one of the easiest methods of rugmaking and mistakes are easy to fix. By selecting the right yarn and colors that complement your décor, you can make a beautiful rug that will last for years.

I found “Magic Carpets – 30 Easy to Make Rug Designs” at my local library. It can also be found at Amazon new or used by clicking on the link below or in some of your favorite book stores.
