Do you have a relative or friend heading off to college this coming fall? Are you looking for that one perfect item for a last minute gift? Need something special to round out the gift basket headed for your student’s dorm room? Want something funny yet inspirational to include with the first care package you send to your student? Then think about picking up a copy of Yadin and Kaufman’s How to Survive Your Freshman Year.
In the last few weeks, I’ve had quite a few publishers submit various “How To” books for future review on this site. But this one shaped up to be something special. It’s not written by “experts.” Instead, the editors surveyed actual college students and graduates for their tips and advice on how they actually survived their freshman year.
It’s a fun, quick read as the editors have presented information in snippets. You can pick it up, set it down, and pick it right up again later without ever missing a beat. Right at 238 pages, the book covers topics ranging from what to take with you to college, how to find and make friends, managing everyday life, money management, dating, vacations, Greek life, family ties, and whether pop-tarts and beer are essential food groups for college students.
It’ll make you laugh (assume that hair you find in your food is yours and move on), it’ll make you ponder (do socks enter an alternate dimension in the washer), it’ll make you cry (please mom, don’t leave me here). And at $13.95 U.S. (or less, depending on where you purchase it), it’s a really good buy!
