My Life in Ruins – Nia Vardalos. We all know how funny and entertaining this woman can be. If you liked My Big Fat Greek Wedding, you’re going to enjoy My Life in Ruins just as much. Nia plays a woman named Georgia who goes to Greece to teach, but ends up losing her job. Struggling and not wanting to leave this wonderful city she goes to work as a tour guide in Greece. She soon discovers that being a tour guide is not all it’s cracked up to be.
Fed up with this job, her boss and her coworker she decides to quit after this last tour. What Georgia doesn’t count on is getting to know her last group of tourists and creating a bond with them. Along the way she not only finds herself, but she finds a group of people that she absolutely adores. Filmed on location this is not only funny but the scenes of Greece are gorgeous. I really enjoyed seeing Nia again and her comedy is fabulous. If you liked any of her other movies you will like this one.
Here are some of the mistakes I found in My Life in Ruins.
When Georgia is talking to Irv, played by Richard Dreyfus, she gets chocolate ice cream on the right side of her jacket. As the scene bounces back from her to Irv the stain moves from the right to the left side of her jacket.
The following day when she wears the blazer again the stain is much smaller, you think ok she washed some of it off. But, when she is seen wearing it again the stain is back to being the size it was before.
Even though the film is supposed to be filmed all in Greece you can clearly see that some of the geography is in Spain.
While in the bus Georgia decides to tell them a story about the Oracle of Delphi. At the beginning of the story there are three women sitting behind Irv. As she continues the story the three women are gone. At the end when Georgia is finished the three women are back again.
One thing that surprised me about this movie was that it was the first movie allowed to be filmed at the Acropolis since 1957 when they filmed Boy On a Dolphin. The Greek government had previously denied any filming on location because they were afraid of what might happen to some of the ancient sites.
This is a very cute movie with some beautiful scenery and some very touching moments. I encourage anyone who likes any of Nia’s previous movies to see it.
