‘The International Day of Peace “is meant to be a day of global cease-fire.
I call on all countries and all people to stop all hostilities for the entire day. I also urge all people around the world to observe a minute of silence at 12 noon. Let us hold in our hearts the ideal of peace.”’
Kofi Annan --
United Nations Secretary-General
21 September 2005
The International Day of Peace started back in 1981 by resolution 38/67 (see links below) of the United Nations General Assembly. Resolution 55/282 set the annual date to September 21, it is a day non-violence and a cease fire. It was adopted unanimously by all the Member States of the United Nations General Assembly. As tradition, this year the Secretary-General (Kofi Annan) will ring the Peace Bell and events and observances are planned around the world.
Baha’is all over the world will also hold observances and events to celebrate The International Day of Peace. Take a moment on September 21, The International Day of Peace and observe a minute of silence at 12 noon and possibly a prayer for world peace.
“The gift of God to this enlightened age is the knowledge of the oneness of mankind and of the fundamental oneness of religion. War shall cease between nations, and by the will of God the Most Great Peace shall come; the world will be seen as a new world, and all men will live as brothers.”
Abdu'l-Baha, Abdu'l-Baha in London, p. 19
PRAYER FOR AMERICA
O Thou kind Lord! This gathering is turning to Thee. These hearts are radiant with Thy love. These minds and spirits are exhilarated by the message of Thy glad-tidings. O God! Let this American democracy become glorious in spiritual degrees even as it has aspired to material degrees, and render this just government victorious. Confirm this revered nation to upraise the standard of the oneness of humanity, to promulgate the Most Great Peace, to become thereby most glorious and praiseworthy among all the nations of the world. O God! This American nation is worthy of Thy favors and is deserving of Thy mercy. Make it precious and near to Thee through Thy bounty and bestowal.
