Relieve Morning Sickness - Cope with Nausea

While morning sickness can vary for each pregnant mother, the helpful things that ease morning sickness also differ for each mother. Here are several tips that may (or may not) help. Sometimes a combination of ideas are beneficial. If you are a pregnant woman struggling with morning sickness you may find yourself attracted to a couple of these tips more strongly than the others. Try these first, as they are likely to be the best choices for you.

~ Identify Your Triggers - For most pregnant women there are definite, strong triggers that cause nauseous feelings or vomiting. This might be a particular smell, or certain food, but once you've identified your triggers, just avoid them as much as possible. You may have to change your usual menu plan, or have a partner take over certain chores.

~ Keep Your Stomach Full - Eat right before going to bed so you won't be waking up on an empty stomach. Also, try eating first thing in the morning before rising out of bed to help keep your blood sugar levels more even. This can be one of the most important things for relieving morning sickness.

~ Eat Frequently - Along the same lines as the tip above, it can be very helpful to eat at regular intervals throughout the day - even if you don't feel like it. When my morning sickness was at it's worst it was very helpful to eat something every hour. I set a timer to make sure I didn't go too long. Sometimes it might just be a handful of grapes and a square of cheese on a wheat cracker. As long as you are putting something in your stomach it will help ease your morning sickness and keep you nourished.

~ Choose Foods Easy on the Stomach - Try following the prompting of your stomach when it comes to food choices! Select nutritious, easy to digest foods, that won't upset your stomach. Some foods you might try include yogurt, fruit smoothies, fruits, raw vegetables, nuts, rice, avocados, pickles or pretzels. Avoid heavy, fat-laden foods that can increase heartburn and nausea such as ice cream, french fries or fried chicken.

~ Hard Candies - If you are battling morning sickness you might find it helpful to keep a handful of hard candies in your pocket all day. Experiment to see which type seems to help you the most; peppermints, lifesavers, sour lemon drops, hard caramels, etc.

~ Ginger and Peppermint - Ginger and peppermint have long been hailed for their ability to ease the nausea associated with first trimester pregnancy. These can often be taken in tea or herbal forms. Ginger is available in capsules as well. Speak with your health care provider about other herbs or medications to ease severe morning sickness.
