Non-Slip Rug Options

Here are a few inexpensive options to help keep your rugs in place to prevent slips and falls.

Before going to the store, there are a few things to take into consideration:
The size of the rug
Will the rug be placed on carpeting, tile, hardwood or cement?
Will the rug be exposed to moisture? (bathroom, deck, patio, basement…)
How will you clean the rug, hand wash, machine wash or dry clean?
How often and how will you clean the floor the rug is laying on?
Will the rug be placed inside or outside?

Reading the manufacture’s labels and instructions will help you decide on the best option.

Non-Slip Rug Pads:
Rug Pads can be purchased to fit the size of your rug, or can be purchased larger than your rug and cut to size. Rug Pads are easy to use and cut, prevent slips and falls and will help your rug last longer. Rug Pads can be cut just slightly smaller than your rug, so they don’t show. I've purchased Mohawk Rug Stay Non-Slip pads from my local discount store for most of my area rugs.

Non-Slip Rug Strips:
Strips generally come in a roll, similar to tape. The strips have a sticky feeling and are separated on the roll with a liner. To use strips, rugs and floors should be clean and dry. Unroll the strip, and press firmly to the backside of your rug and cut. Most rugs will stay in place if you place one strip along each side of the rug and than place one strip approximately every 18” down the middle. Remove the liner from the strips and lay your rug on the floor. Test the rug to see if it stays in place, if it is still slipping, add more strips. Non-slip rug strips are removable and some can also be placed directly on the floor.

Strips and Pads are not just for rugs. We had a video game mat that would slip all over the carpet when we used it. We put a few non-slip rug strips on the backside of the mat and now it stays put!

Non-Skid Rug Coating
Non-Skid Coating is applied to the backside of rugs with a paintbrush. Rugs should be clean and two coats will probably be needed. I have purchased Rug Backing by SAF-T-BAK from my local craft store and I like to use the coating on machine washable rugs for the bathroom as rug pads and strips probably would not hold up very well in the washing machine. Rug Coatings claim to help rugs keep their shape and prevent fraying and unraveling. This brand is machine washable, but does not recommend dry cleaning. If you are not sure if rug coating is the best option, read the manufacturer's instructions and test a small area before applying to the entire rug.

Other options for keeping rugs from slipping include Double-Sided Carpet Tape, Velcro and Non-Slip Sprays. Keep in mind that some options may damage or be hard to remove from your flooring. If you aren’t sure, test in an inconspicuous area before using.
