The Supernanny Tackles Autism

The Supernanny season premiere will be Friday, September 23, 2005. Jo Frost is the Supernanny, which airs on the ABC network. It appears to be two episodes according to the Website. The Minyon family will be at 8 pm with the Webb family at 9 pm.

Supernanny used to be on Monday evenings at 10 pm. My son Nicholas never saw the television show, but viewed many commercials and mentioned over and over last year that I needed to get the Supernanny over to our house to help with Matthew's screaming bouts.

When we were at Border's Book store last month we saw the book by the Supernanny and then borrowed it from the library. I had decided to read through Supernanny - How to Get the Best from Your Children by Jo Frost to see if she has any experience with special needs. This book was just published in 2005 and covers her top ten rules on dresssing and washing, toilet training, eating problems, social skills and behavior problems. You can read excerpts from the Top Ten Rules from the Supernanny book.

Lynn Kern Koegel, Ph.D.is one of the leading experts on the treatment of autism and the co-founder of Autism Research Center at the Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Santa Barbara with her husband, Robert L. Koegel, Ph.D.

In 2004 Lynn co-wrote with Claire LaZebnik the book, Overcoming Autism: Finding the Answers, Strategies, and Hope That Can Transform a Child's Life. I purchased a copy of this book not too long ago and need to peruse it soon. It is noted on the cover of the book, " A State-of-the-Art Approach to Reducing the Symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorders". Claire is the mother of a son with autism providing insight into the daily life of parents coping with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Lynn Koegel, Ph.D. will briefly appear on the opening series of the Supernanny on September 23, 2005 as a special needs expert from UCSB. At the end of October, Lynn will be featured in an autism episode on the Supernanny show. The website for the UCSB Autism Research & Training Center.

***UPDATE*** - I read an article in the October issue of L.A.Parent, The Parent Trap: How Living in L.A. Can Feed Parental Anxieties. Dr. Catherine Selden, a clinical and forensic psychologist and consultant to ABC's Supernanny was quoted, "The show highlights the most extreme cases of parents who've lost control of their children, and the household is in complete chaos" After reading that quote I am more certain that we will not be contacting the Supernanny for assistance in my household!

Further in the article - " For her part, Selden says she spends several hours with each potential Supernanny family, ensuring that the group can be helped - and not harmed - by appearing on the show and to advise the nanny on the issues affecting the family. Afterward, she follows up to see whether the nanny's techniques stuck"

I would really like to see a show focusing on "behind the scenes" and how the show is formed from the time they make contact with the family. I think that would be helpful to viewers who are parents like myself.

***UPDATE*** - "Facente Family" -- Supernanny Jo Frost teams with world-renowned autism expert Dr. Lynn Koegel to tackle the parenting issues faced by a family whose three-year-old son is an outsider in his own home. This episode of "Supernanny" airs on FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 4 (8:00-9:00 p.m. ET) on the ABC Television Network.

L.A. Parent is a free monthly magazine that is found in libraries within Los Angeles County. Each month's Issue is available online.

***UPDATE*** Bob and Lynn Koegel's new book is due to be released on November 11, 2005 by Brooke's Publishing - entitled Pivotal Response Treatments for Autism.

Supernanny airs on Monday nite at 8 pm on ABC.

PLEASE NOTE: This episode will be repeated on Monday, June 19, 2006 on ABC at 8 pm ET/PT.
