Sewing Instructions For Doll Bloomers

Materials Needed
scrap of white fabric, I used a recycled white dress shirt.
matching thread
1/8 inch wide or 1/4 inch wide elastic 13 inches long

Look here for the bloomers pattern and a picture of the finished bloomers.

The pattern includes a 1/4 inch seam allowance for all seams. It is shown on a 1/2 inch grid.

To make the ruffled leg trim cut 2 strips of fabric each 1 inch wide by 20 inches long. Fold the strips in half the long way so that they are 1/2 inch wide by 20 inches long. Using a long basting stitch, 1/4 inch in from the cut edges on the 20 inch side, gather the folded fabric. Pin and sew the ruffles to both leg openings with right sides together. Clip the curves and top stitch close to the first stitching line to tack the seam allowance to the wrong side of bloomers. Do this to both leg openings.

Stitch both sides together at the center seam, with right sides facing each other. Leave the back seam open above the mark. Turn the seam allowance, above the mark, to the wrong side 1/8 inch, twice and stitch down. Pin and stitch the side seams, right sides together.

Turn the waist edge to the wrong side 1/4 inch and stitch down. Turn down the same edge to the wrong side 1/2 inch to form the waistband. Stitch down with stitching very close to the folded edge. Leave an opening 1/4 inch long to put the elastic through. Attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic and insert the pin through the opening left in the waistband. Using the safety pin, pull the elastic all the way through the waistband, keeping both ends of the elastic outside. Sew both ends of the elastic firmly together then gently stretch the waistband. This will pull the elastic completely inside the waistband.

The pattern size can be adjusted to make bloomers for any size doll. Measure the waist size of your doll and print out the pattern to fit. For example, the waist of my doll is 13 inches around. The waist line of the pattern is 4 inches. Minus 1/4 inch seam allowances on both sides of each piece, it makes a finished waistband of 14 inches before the elastic is put in. So for a doll with a 10 inch waist you would want the pattern to be 2 3/4 inches wide at the top.
