With so much of the population overweight or on the verge of obesity the science community just can't figure out why. They're stumped. With so many fat people out there you'd think someone would just go out and ask. "Why do you overeat?" (Yes, I'm assuming if you are obese you overeat. I am obviously not referring to the select few who are overweight for endocrine reasons). There isn't one reason for all obese people and I'm sure there are many combined reasons, some of which they may or may not be aware of (or care about).
Loneliness. Boredom. Depression. The usual culprits but what about the state of affairs in our economy and homeland. We are surrounded by daily threats of war, terrorisms, flu vaccine shortage, children killing children, mommies killing babies, earthquakes, tsunamis and hurricanes. No one prepared us for what we are facing in the world today and in turn, we are not able to instruct our kids who are now on their way to becoming obese. Our kids are obese because we are teaching them the only coping mechanism we've learned - eating food. It feels good.
What to Do About It
People are being told daily what direction they should or shouldn't be going in. Everyone's direction is supposedly correct, according to the research and according to popular opinion (heck even I think I'm right). How the hell is anyone able to make an informed decision? Whatever one they make they will be told they are making a mistake by someone. Eat low-carb, don't eat low-carb. Eat low-fat, don't eat low-fat. Eat meat, don't eat meat. Use supplements, don't use supplement.
Instead of spending millions of dollars showing and telling fat people what they should or shouldn't be eating (most 'know' anyway) how about spending some of that money on coping skills education. Like math and English, coping skills need to be taught.
Learn Some Manners
How about some manners? Being rude and inconsiderate to a fat person on the street (or in your family) doesn't help. In fact, that person is more likely to go on a binge you'll never see. Learn some manners. What's the saying, "Do unto others... " And don't tell us you're doing it because you care. Caring people don't make disparaging comments to someone they care about. Work past your disgust; find some humanity for another human being. Look past the fat. There is a real person there with feelings (and a history you know nothing about). Give someone a hug or if you can't muster the strength just be nice.
Deal With It
Now some of you may be asking what about the rest of the population who are not overweight, they seem to coping. They've "learned to deal". Really? Can you say alcohol, drugs, pornography, prostitution, self mutilation, anorexia, infidelity, etc... etc... Doesn't look or sound like coping to me.
No one seems to be dealing with it. It's time to stop calling one another names. It's also time to give ourselves and others the respect we all deserve. Regardless of the lifestyles people choose to live, just be nice.
