Simple Cinco de Mayo

Celebrating Cinco De Mayo is a fun activity whether you have children or not. People around the world and in Mexico celebrate Mexican pride on May 5th. Originally it was celebrated because in the 1860s Mexico defeated the French army. Fun food and crafts are all included in this festive day.

Some craft ideas include clothespin Mexican dancing dolls, sound shaker instruments, and Mexican pinatas.
-Clothespin Mexican dancing dolls. You will need clothespins, coffee filters, pipe cleaners, paint, glue, and possibly tape. Take the clothespin and paint or draw on a lovely face. Paint the coffee filters with watercolors and let them dry completely. When coffee filters are done drying, use crayons to draw embellishments. The coffee filters will become the skirts and blouses. Fold the coffee filter in half twice and then snip the top. Using the hole, gently fit the clothespin in the center. Secure by gluing. You now have the skirt section of the doll. Wrap a pipe cleaner around the clothespin and this will become the arms of the doll. Add another coffee filter onto the body of the clothespin and this will become the blouse. Embellish with drawings or other accessories and viola you have a beautiful doll!
-Sound shaker instruments. Collect containers, such as yogurt containers with lids or jars. Also, collect beans and cereals. Insert the beans/grains into the containers and secure lids with glue. Take crepe paper or decorative paper and glue/affix to the outside of the container. Let it dry. Your sound shaker instrument is ready!
-Mexican pinatas. Pinatas are easier created than expected. Find a suitable box that will be somewhat easily broken. Insert your favorites candies to the box. Secure the box. Decorate the box with the colors of the Mexican flag; red, white, and green. Easily, you have a fun pinata!

Food is very important in a Cinco de Mayo celebration. Some popular choices are homemade guacamole, tacos, and bread.
-Guacamole is a very easy thing to make. Take two ripe avocados and add one small chopped onion, a few tablespoons of lime juice, small teaspoon of ground cumin, 1/3 cup of cilantro, and some sea salt to taste. Mix ingredients into the bowl and serve with chips.
-Set up a taco bar. Have available hard taco shells and soft taco shells, diced tomatoes, ground beef or turkey, olives, cheese, chopped onions, etc. Let people serve themselves!
-A favorite among many is Cinco de Mayo bread. Google "cinco de mayo bread" and you will find many savory recipes that include chiles, corn, jalapenos, and cilantro.

Celebrating Cinco de Mayo can be fun and exciting, yet very simple if you use these tips! Don't get wrapped up in the preparations and just remember to have fun!
