The Power of Focus Book Review

The Power of Focus by Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen and Les Hewitt is subtitled “How to hit your business, personal and financial targets with absolute certainty”, and as lofty a promise as it is, you just might find it works for you.

Canfield and Hansen created the hugely successful Chicken Soup"Chicken Soup" series, and Hewitt is the founder of the “Achievers Coaching Program”. The book is peppered with inspiring stories and examples of those who implemented the methods outlined in the book and achieved their goals.

The authors warn in the book’s forward that this is no “magic quick-fix”. The book’s structure is based on 10 “Focusing Strategies” dealing with such things as habits, goal-setting, relationships and more. The authors develop each strategy in detail, and there are action steps at the end of each chapter to reinforce and implement the strategy into your life.

You’ll jump right into creating a better life in the first section titled “Your Habits will determine your Future”. They fully explain how your good habits help you succeed and bad habits help you fail. They even include a list of some common bad habits uncovered in their workshops and if you’re like me, you’ll see yourself in some of these. But, you cannot fix what you cannot see and this book is about making changes in your life. They ask you to list your own bad habits so that you can pay attention to your behaviors and correct them. Then, they show you how to develop successful habits and give a detailed step-by-step action plan for improving your habits.

In “The Power of Focus” you’ll learn how to identify your strengths so that you can focus on them. The book is filled with tips and strategies for managing your time, relationships, and attitudes. For example, the b-Alert formula is their system for living a balanced life every day by developing a strategy (blueprint), taking Action on those important goal-focused items, and including time for learning, exercising, relaxing and thinking. It is a worthy exercise and a great way to make sure your days focus on your goals, growth, and taking care of yourself.

I found many of the ideas in this book to be stuff I’d heard before. It’s no secret that persistence, consistency, exercise, great relationships, personal growth and so on can help you succeed. But, the structure of their plan not only reinforces those ideas, it clearly explains with samples and how-to’s that make sense. You can read this book, do the activities along the way, and create a workable plan for achieving your goals and living the life you envision. It’s not easy. It will require you to analyze your behavior and actually take steps to improve. But, the payoff is well worth it.
