"The Fog" Creeps Into Top US Box Office Slot This Week

In a week that saw three big new movies open, it was a remake of a classic 80s horror film that took top honors at the US box office this weekend, according to records by Box Office Mojo.

Small screen stars Tom Welling (Smallville) and Maggie Grace (Lost) helped drive the new version of John Carpenter's classic horror film, "The Fog," into the top spot, with a estimated total of $12.2 million. Last week's number one film, the animated "Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit," slid to second, but held with a still respectable $11.7 million take, bringing its two week total to just over $33 million.

Cameron Crowe's much-hyped "Elizabethtown," starring Orlando Bloom and Kirsten Dunst, also opened this week. It grabbed the third slot, with $11 million. "Domino," the high-action semi-documentary of bounty hunter Domino Harvey, starring actress Kiera Knightly, was the other new opener this week. It anchors the bottom half of the top ten with $4.7 million in weekend receipts.

All totals are based upon actual Friday and Saturday ticketing, as well as an advanced estimate of Sunday's receipts. Here is this weekend's estimated box office champs:
