The 35th Annual Daytime Awards aired last Friday night on ABC and I had the opportunity to attend for the first time. It was a great time, especially watching the stars as they walked down the red carpet. The awards show, held in Hollywood’s Kodak Theatre, was taped live for broadcast to the East Coast (tape delayed for all others). During all the commercial breaks, the theater audience was treated to blooper reels and special videos which made the event even more enjoyable.
Even though the ABC soaps didn’t garner many nominations this year, they definitely cleaned up in some important categories. If you missed any of the results, here’s a quick recap of all the ABC wins:
Outstanding Drama Series: General Hospital
The possible shocker of the night was General Hospital’s win for best drama. Even Executive Producer, Jill Farren Phelps, seemed surprised with the win during her acceptance speech. General Hospital submitted the Metro Court hostage crisis as part of their Emmy reel. This sweeps storyline was definitely cutting edge and unique for daytime.
Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series: Anthony Geary
Geary took home his 6th Daytime Emmy win, setting the record for most wins by a male actor in this category. Geary, famous for his portrayal of Luke Spencer, submitted more of a comedic episode for his Emmy reel, although he dealt with some major mortality issues this past year.
Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series: One Life to Live
Outstanding Directing in a Drama Series: One Life to Live
Under the guidance of Head Writer Ron Carlivati, One Life to Live has definitely shown a creative upswing this past year. The show has amazing cast integration and unlike many other soaps, they are utilizing their talented veteran actors in key stories.
Outstanding Achievement in Casting for a Drama Series: General Hospital
Mark Teschner has been the casting director on General Hospital since 1989 and is highly respected in the industry and is on the Board of Governors for the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
