Starting a Toothbrush Rug

One way to start a toothbrush rug is to make a chain as your starting row, and then make the knots into the links of the chain.

To make the chain, start with a two-yard piece of fabric, folded in half. Then create a loop by making a slipknot in the middle of the strip, and let the two ends hang down. With a crochet hook or your finger pull the two ends halfway through the loop This creates another loop. Adjust the length of the loop and again pull the strips halfway through the loop. Continue until there are enough links in the chain to form a circle. Then pull the ends completely through the loop.

The next step is to make a circle out of the chain by pulling one of the strips through the first link. Keep this strip as your core strip and use the other strip to make the knots. It is now time to add some more fabric to the strips and use a toothbrush needle to make the knots into the links of the chain, taking care to carry the core stripo alongside the chain so the knots go around that strips as well.
