Apples to Apples

When it comes to party games, the best games are those that are simple and fun. Apples to Apples is a party game where you can explain the rules to guests in a few minutes. This game can be played around a table, in the living room, or practically anywhere. All you need is the red and green cards to play. There is no board or game pieces.

There are two types of cards in Apples to Apples - red cards and green cards. Each player has so many red cards in their hand. When it is your turn, you will turn over a green card for everyone to see. Then players choose a red card from their hand that they feel best represents (or compares to) the green card.

Green cards contain adjectives or descriptions like scary, peaceful, wild. The red cards contain nouns - so you choose a red card that is a best description for the green card. Pass your red card face down to the player who turned over the green card. Once everyone has submitted an answer, the player will shuffle and reveal all answers then she will choose a best answer. The player then earns one green card and is that much closer to winning the game.

Some players may not choose the best comparison. A player might choose an answer that is the opposite or is laughable. In a recent game of Apples to Apples, the word was spirituality to which the player chose orange from all of the answers. So it is not necessarily what you believe to be the best answer. Think about the player who will be choosing the answer. They may reward a silly answer over a serious answer. If you are playing with acquaintances, then it may take a few rounds to get a good idea of what answers they appreciate.

Apples to Apples is loads of fun. It is also a great ice breaker. Playing time will vary depending upon the number of players but usually a game lasts less than 30 minutes. A player must have so many green cards to win the game - the number of cards again depends on the number of players.
