Honestly I originally took out a copy of this book from the local library for the pure reason that I once lived a short drive away from the Alexander Graham Bell Museum. I didn't flick through it before taking it home and I was not expecting a whole lot from it. I simply got it just to put my curiosity at rest.
When reading the book to my son later that night I was pleasantly surprised to find that I very much enjoyed it. The book tells the story of how Alexander Graham Bell, Casey Baldwin, Thomas Selfridge, Glen Curtiss, and J.A.D. McCurdy (the original members of the Aerial Experiment Association) came about creating the first airplane. It is jam packed full of educational Canadian History put forth in a fun style kids love.
I would recommend this book to anyone from toddler size right through elementary school. Heck I am a grown adult and I loved it! I think this book would make a great addition to any teachers curriculum or even to just keep at hand for students to read in their free time.
The illustrations in the book are nothing extremely fancy but I thought them to be very cute and my son loved asking questions about them. They did a great job of depicting how the idea of an airplane all began with a kite and has grown into what we see flying in the skies today. The best part is that they are able to keep the story fun and light hearted instead giving it a text book type of feel and I think a big part of accomplishing this was through these cute cartoon pictures.
For those of you on the more curious side "Author Linda Brand is a full-time Interpretation Officer at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum"* which is located in Ottawa, Canada.
I think author Linda Brand and illustrator Francois Gauvreau hit the nail right on the head when it comes to gearing a book about history to young kids. I also believe that The Fantastic Flight of The Silver Dart is a great way to teach your kids some Canadian History without them even realizing it, especially if you have a little one who loves airplanes as much as my little guy does. This book would make a great Birthday or Christmas present for any younger child on your list!
