Football Withdrawal

This past week, I felt myself wandering aimlessly around the house. I felt fine, but, there was obviously something missing. As I cooked dinner on Sunday, it hit meÖI was suffering from football withdrawal! It happens every year after the Super Bowl, but, I think it was worse this year because I was snowed in (with the whole family) and didnít have my normal escape mechanism. Note to teachers Ė when you hear that several feet of snow is on the wayÖ please, please, please send home a lot of homework!!!

College basketball has become more appealing these days. Iíve watched more games this week than I normally do. I believe itís due to my need to get ready for March Madness, because I intend on having a perfect bracket this year. But, itís not football. I watched the NCAA Lacrosse Preview last night. It was interesting. For those of you who never played, coached or watched lacrosse, itís a really cool sport. Some athletes use spring lacrosse to keep up their football skills, while others just flat out show their prowess in the sport. Jim Brown is probably the most revered and dominate lacrosse player ever. He didnít do too badly in the NFL either. As I said, lacrosse is cool, but itís not football.

My Sunday ritual of scheduling activities, cooking and getting ready for the upcoming work/school week while watching a very important game has now come to a screeching halt. So, what will occupy my time? I know, Iíll turn on NFL Network to watch a football game. At that point on Sunday, it didnít matter which game was on, I just wanted to watch something. Unfortunately for me, NFL Follies was on. Donít get me wrong, NFL Follies can be somewhat entertaining, however, I was not in the mood for that type of entertainment. As I searched through the on-screen TV guide, I found that NFL Network was having a Follies marathon. Too bad for me! I suppose my need to watch real, live football will have to wait till August.

Meanwhile, Iíll have to make do with other programming. NFL Combine coverage is coming in about 10 days. NFL Network analysts will scrutinize every potential professional player to the nth degree. Itís nice to see the young men who will ultimately become stars in the league complete various drills in an up-close and personal way. After the Combine is the NFL Draft. I understand that the first round of the Draft will be televised in prime time, an unprecedented move. It will be interesting to find out whether or not the ratings increase with the move. All this is great, but, itís still not live football.

Man, the Hall of Fame game is a little more than five months away. What am I going to do? Life just isnít fair.
