Abdullah the Butcher was the original hardcore wrestler, the original extreme wrestler and any other adjective you care to throw in there such as brutal and vicious. He sent the standard that was followed by such wrestlers as Cactus Jack Manson, later Mick Foley, Maniac Mark Lewin, Sabu and Terrible Terry Funk among others. Dubbed the Madman from the Sudan, and the Sudanese Butcher, Abdullah the Butcher was actually born in Windsor, Ontario, Canada on November 12, 1936.
Abdullah the Butcher was 6’1” and weighed in at a lean, mean 361 pounds when he began wrestling in 1958. As a young boy, he learned Martial Arts like Judo and Karate and brought these into the squared circle with him as he used judo style flips and karate style chops on his opponents. People who had come to watch the “Sudanese Madman” wrestle knew they were not in for a scientific or technical style match. No, they knew there would be wailing and blood-letting. Abdullah never cared about what the fans or the wrestlers thought of him nor did he care about winning championships or winning matches period for that matter. No his biggest concern was where to conceal the fork that he used to carve road maps in the foreheads of his opponents. He did, however, manage to hold some championship belts and has wrestled in nearly all of the major wrestling promotions around the world except for the WWE.
Abdullah the Butcher has had some memorable, albeit horrific matches against the likes of the Original Sheik, Dusty Rhodes, Harley Race, Sting and Cactus Jack as well as a who’s who list of other wrestlers and those wrestlers have the scars to remember those matches by. While other wrestlers relied solely on wristlocks and leg locks, the Madman from Sudan relied on forks, pencils, chairs and any other weapon he could wield and cause damage with as well as his favorite move; a Karate thrust to the throat. He also did not care if he wrestled a “face” or a “heel”. Abdullah went after every opponent with equal zeal and extreme prejudice.
Outside of the ring, Abdullah the Butcher is one of the nicest people you will ever meet and owns a couple of restaurants called: Abdullah the Butcher's House of Ribs and Chinese Food. One is in southwest Atlanta and one in Japan. At the age of 73, Abdullah the Butcher is still scheduled to wrestle in his last match at Lockout, a World Wrestling Council show, on December 13, 2008 in Puerto Rico. Abdullah the Butcher is truly one of the greats and truly set the standard for hardcore wrestling and in-ring violence and mayhem that wrestlers use today.
