Festivities Around the Country

The fourth of July is the biggest and the best summer holiday and one of my favorites. Family tradition reigns. You might go to the same house for a barbecue and fireworks year after year or perhaps you spend it at the beach, an area festival or in a park. For me, every year for the past 14 years has been spent at my sister-in-law's house with my husband's family. Things have changed over the years -- my sister-in-law and brother-in-law built a new house, close family and friends have passed on and two little boys entered our lives. One thing that hasn't changed though is my sister-in-law's menu. Actually, it's my brother-in-law that does the cooking, but every year we look forward to those tender ribs and my mother-in-law's sweet desserts.

Create a tradition in your family or circle of friends with this July 4th menu. Decorate your party area with flags, bunting or red, white and blue streamers. Centerpiece ideas include placing red and white geraniums on tables, placing 2 or 3 flags in small buckets filled with sand or lining the center of the table with red, white and blue ribbons.

Party For America Menu

Tangy Barbecued Spareribs - A perennial cookout favorite. These ribs are sweet, tender and finger-lickin' good.

Grilled Hot Dogs, Italian Sausage and Hamburgers - For the kids and those that don't want to get messy from those scrumptious ribs.

Grilled Vegetable Kabobs - Prepare these ahead of time. These kabobs are tasty and healthy too!

Classic Creamy Coleslaw - What cookout would be complete without coleslaw?

Stars and Stripes Puffs - A festive and delicious dessert that will need to stay indoors until serving time.

Red, White and Blue Parfaits - Refreshing and easy to make. Instead of putting this recipe into parfait glasses, put the cut-up Jell-O chunks in a trifle bowl for an amazing presentation.

Fresh Fruit with Marshmallow Dip - Cut up watermelon, cantaloupe and strawberries, add a few grapes and serve with dip.

Lemonade Supreme - A delicious and unique twist on a summertime favorite. Your guests will be begging for more.

Old-Fashioned Lemonade - If you're a traditionalist, here's a great recipe from our Home Cooking host.

The Scrambled States of America
by Laurie Keller
It takes an obsessive brand of wackiness to bring off a picture book whose protagonists are the fifty states of America. In this first picture book by Laurie Keller, she manages to succeed in making her young audience acquire a pretty good idea of where each state is. She even gets the young reader to watch with suspense the budding romance between Mississippi and Nevada.
Valley Forge US1-1 3' x 5' American Flag Kit
Fly your patriotic colors with this Valley Forge American flag kit from Orgill. Generously sized at 3-by-5 feet, the flag is a poly/cotton blend that retains its vivid colors and catches the breeze well. The kit includes all the pieces you need to mount and fly the flag--a tri-part, six-foot aluminum flagpole with bracket and hardware, as well as a plastic gold-colored eagle ornament to top the pole. Easy to assemble, the flag makes a distinctive addition to home or business.
