1408

Mike Enslin has spent most of his career visiting and writing about different places known to be haunted and finding skepticism at each stop. So when he receives a mysterious postcard telling him not to go into room 1408 at the Dolphin Hotel in New York City, his interest is peaked. Despite the hotel staff’s unwillingness to let him stay in the room and the manager’s explanation of the fate of the room’s guests, Mike is undeterred. Despite what he originally thinks about the room, there is a sinister evil in the room that plans to unhinge him. Here are a few movie mistakes to look for while watching “1408”.

· At the very beginning of the movie, Mike Enslin is at the Weeping Beech Inn. Mike throws his things on the bed and sits down. It then cuts to Mike when he’s sitting in the chair across from the bed. One of the pillows is uncovered and propped up on the bed. He is then shown pacing and looking into the fireplace and the pillow is once again covered and flat on the bed. It’s propped up and exposed again in the next view of him getting on the bed.

· Mike walks into the lobby of the Dolphin Hotel. The overhead view shows a woman in a white dress with a baby stroller sitting to his left. There is also a woman in a tan outfit sitting to the lady’s left. The scene cuts to a wide front view of Mike and the woman with the stroller is still there but the other one has vanished. She’s back again a few moments later when Gerald walks up to him.

· During his conversation with Mike, Gerald Olin has a white handkerchief in his jacket pocket that sticks out into two points. When he hands Mike the key to 1408, the handkerchief has three points sticking out.

· Mike walks into the room and flips the first two light switches up. (The third one remains down.) When Mike shuts the door and walks by the panel, the first and third switches are up and the middle one is down.

· Mike tries to get the woman’s attention in the room next door. He tosses a chair and it breaks against the wall. When Mike is on the floor afterwards, the phone’s receiver is also on the floor. A few moments later, after Mike runs to the emergency map of the building, the phone‘s receiver is back in the cradle on the table.

· Mike sees the tombstones and walks over to the phone. In the wider view, the receiver is near the right side of the table, face down. In the next close-up, the receiver is behind the telephone cradle, facing the rest of the phone.

· CAUTION: May contain spoilers! Near the end, when Katie hugs Mike, in the back view of her, her arms are around each of his shoulders. In the front view of her (back of him), her left arm is up on his shoulder and her hands are clasped behind his back. In some side views, her right arm is under his arm.

· CAUTION: May contain spoilers! When the clock resets itself, it begins to countdown again. There is only the clock and lamp on the table next to the bed. It cuts to a view of the entire bedroom and the cognac bottle is now on the table.

· CAUTION: May contain spoilers! Mike is taken out of the room by two firefighters. When the firefighter says “What’s he saying”, the close-up of him shows 1305 on his hat, but it’s a reverse, mirror image.

“1408” (2007) stars John Cusack, Samuel L. Jackson, Mary McCormack and Tony Shalhoub. It runs 104 minutes and is rated PG-13 for thematic material including disturbing sequences of violence and terror, frightening images and language.
