The Holiday

Amanda and Iris have never met but there’s one thing they agree on: they’ve had enough of “love”. Thanks to the internet, the two agree to swap houses for the holidays, Amanda staying at Iris’ country cottage in England while Iris swaps Amanda for her luxury home in Los Angeles. But “love” may have its own agenda when Amanda meets Iris’ brother, Graham, and Iris meets film composer Miles. Here are a few movie mistakes to look for when watching “The Holiday”.

• Near the beginning, Ethan goes into the bedroom where Amanda throws her tennis shoes at him. The first shoe originally bounces and lands on the floor behind him (you can see it on the floor when he says he “just wants to say again…”). When she throws the second shoe, the first shoe is at the far end of the hallway, near the other door. The second one lands somewhere near the first one. But when he walks into the room, away from the door, both shoes are now gone.

• After driving Iris’ car for the first time, Amanda stops in town. The car comes to a screeching halt and in the side view, Amanda has her left arm stretched out, grasping the steering wheel. She puts her right hand on her forehead. It cuts to a close-up and her hands have switched. It’s her left hand on her head and the right one on the wheel.

• Graham meets his friends at the pub just before he sees Amanda across the room. The side view shows him walk over to his friends and he kisses the lady on the cheek and shakes the man’s hand. The lady is holding her glass of wine up to her chin with her right hand. It cuts to a front view and the woman’s glass is on the table.

• Iris and Miles are eating at the restaurant when he takes a phone call from Maggie. After he hangs up, he tells Iris that Maggie misses him. In the close-up when Iris says “we should get the bill”, Miles’ hands are down. But when it cuts to a wider view when he answers “no”, his left hand is against his face.

• Near the end, Arthur walks up the steps to the stage. His hands are empty. He turns to give Iris the “thumbs up” and when it cuts to a front view of him, he’s holding a paper in his left hand.

“The Holiday” (2006) stars Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, Jack Black and Eli Wallach. It runs 138 minutes and is rated PG-13 for sexual content and some strong language.
