On March 11, 2011, an 8.9 magnitude earthquake struck the nation of Japan. Japan is also one of the world’s largest producers of nuclear energy. Within hours of the earthquake, there was concern that at least two of Japan’s nuclear plants had sustained damage as a result of the devastating earthquake. In fact, Japan’s Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency reported that two radioactive substances, cesium and radioactive iodine, had already been detected at one of the nuclear plants shortly after the earthquake.
Some experts are already warning that the damage sustained by at least two of the nuclear reactors maybe the most serious nuclear power plant crisis since the Chernobyl disaster in Russia in 1986.
In an effort to calm initial fears regarding safety concerns over radiation leaking from the damaged nuclear facilities, a Japanese nuclear safety official, Yukio Edano, said, “With evacuation in place and ocean bound wind, we can ensure the safety.”
That is a very disconcerting statement in my opinion. Anyone minutely familiar with the wind patterns of the earth realize that those radioactive winds are heading directly across the Pacific Ocean and will shortly spread across the entire United States, and eventually the entire globe. Our planet has become a very small place. Environmental damage in one location quickly becomes concern for people around the world.
The thyroid gland is extremely susceptible to being damaged by radioactive iodine. Radioactive iodine destroys the thyroid tissue and can lead to thyroid cancer. There is a way to protect your thyroid from harmful exposure to radioactive iodine. The answer is to saturate the thyroid with a safe form of iodine.
After the Chernobyl disaster, residents in nearby Poland and Russia were given potassium iodine to reduce their risk of exposure to the harmful effects of radiation exposure. This step was hailed as a success in preventing an increase incidence of thyroid cancer in the people exposed to the radiation fallout.
As Dr. David Brownstein describes in his book, IODINE: Why You Need It and Why You Can’t Live Without It, when the thyroid is deficient of iodine, it will quickly absorb any iodine it comes in contact with – including radioactive iodine. By ensuring that your thyroid is fully saturated with a safe form of iodine, the thyroid will not absorb the harmful radioactive iodine.
It is already well documented that Americans are severely iodine deficient. As we learn more about the damage to the nuclear plants in Japan over the coming days and weeks, I believe it is vitally important to take steps now to minimize our exposure to the radioactive material that is drifting over us in the air.
Now, more than ever, it is important to ensure your thyroid is fully saturated with iodine. Many doctors, including Dr. Brownstein and Dr. Mark Starr, recommend using Lugol’s Iodine Solution. Dr. Brownstein recommends between 12 and 50 mg per day. The iodine can be applied to the skin or ingested orally by adding it to a small amount of juice or water. Check with your doctor if you have concerns about taking iodine.
