Ely, Nevada - A Family Travel Destination

The history of Ely, Nevada starts with mining. The town has many surrounding mines, but was originally a stagecoach station and post office. In the 1870's and 80's this area was part of a silver boom. After 1900, came the copper boom. This area still has many working mines. More than a billion dollars of copper has been shipped out of the area. The largest of these mines is in nearby Ruth, Nevada.

Old Ruth was the original location of Consolidated Copper Company, an enormous pit mine. This mine's surrounding town is today an example of a company town, although all the area's homes are now privately owned. The area is beautiful and the history is fascinating. The mine was closed for a while but was reopened in 2004.

Ranching is also a part of the history of the Ely, Nevada area. Cattle and sheep raised here were shipped to eastern markets. It would seem that the area would not be conducive to raising livestock, but you only have to view the Great Basin to understand why this is perfect cattle country.

Ely, Nevada isn't near anywhere, so it is usually a destination or "on the way to" stopover. There are many things to do and see in the Ely area. The area is a ruggedly beautiful wilderness full of history and ancient artifacts.

Ely has comfortable lodgings, great food and much to see. Our favorite sleepover spot is the Copper Queen Ramada Inn. It has large rooms, with microwave, fridge and great beds. They are pet and kid friendly. All the rooms open to the interior which houses the indoor pool, casino and restaurant. The Italian restaurant, Evahs, is very good. I highly recommend the pizza. The heated indoor pool and spa are great when the weather is unpredictable.

Area attractions include fishing, cave exploring, museums and shopping. Many ½ day and day trips drives surround the area. Bring plenty of film and batteries for the camera, as there is so much beauty here. The most famous tourist attraction in Ely is the Ghost Train of Old Ely. This gem will take you back to the early mining and ranching days of the Old West.

Make sure you plan a long weekend stay in Ely. It's perfect for a family trip, or a romantic winter weekend.
