The top baby names of 2007 were just released! The very top names, Jacob and Emily, have stayed the same, but most of the other names in the top twenty have shuffled around a bit.
Here are the new top male names (and how the relative popularity of each name has changed since last year):
1. Jacob
2. Michael
3. Ethan (up from 4th)
4. Joshua (down from 3rd)
5. Daniel (up from 6th)
6. Christopher (up from 7th)
7. Anthony (up from 9th)
8. William (up from 10th)
9. Matthew (down from 5th)
10. Andrew (down from 8th)
11. Alexander (up from 12th)
12. David (up from 13th)
13. Joseph (down from 11th)
14. Noah (up from 15th)
15. James (up from 16th)
16. Ryan (down from 14th)
17. Logan (up from 19th)
18. Jayden (up from 49th)
19. John (up from 20th)
20. Nicholas (down from 17th)
That's right -- Jayden leaped 31 spots to land in the top 20. The "ayden" family of names (Aiden, Brayden, Caden, etc.) is extremely popular right now, but not even I was expecting a jump like that.
And, logically, one new name necessarily means that one other name was bumped from the list. That other name is Tyler, which dropped from 18th in 2006 to 21st in 2007.
Here are the new top female names:
1. Emily
2. Isabella (up from 4th)
3. Emma (down from 2nd)
4. Ava (up from 5th)
5. Madison (down from 3rd)
6. Sophia (up from 9th)
7. Olivia
8. Abigail (down from 6th)
9. Hannah (down from 8th)
10. Elizabeth (up from 11th)
11. Addison (up from 28th)
12. Samantha (down from 10th)
13. Ashley (down from 12th)
14. Alyssa (up from 19th)
15. Mia (down from 13th)
16. Chloe (up from 18th)
17. Natalie
18. Sarah (down from 15th)
19. Alexis (down from 14th)
20. Grace (down from 16th)
As with the male names, there was only one big change -- the addition of Addison, which jumped 17 spots to debut in the top 20. It wasn't as extreme a jump as that of Jayden, but still pretty drastic.
Addison ended up replacing Brianna, which fell from 20th in 2006 to 22nd in 2007.
