Maintaining your writing momentum during the family vacation may seem like a hopeless idea, but with a little planning you can be productive and also have a little fun. There are many ways that you can use your holiday to keep on track. Take into consideration your intended travel method. The path leading to your holiday destination can offer trouble-free ways to get words on paper.
Planes. If you are planning a holiday that will involve plane travel, the easiest way to stay in the “writing zone” is to write during the journey. With the limited space allowed for luggage these days, the best course of action is to put a pen and a stack of index cards in your pocket. It’s great if you can bring your laptop, but index cards make it convenient to jot down your thoughts during the flight without any hassle, and it’s also a productive way to use spare time during layovers.
Trains. Perhaps one of the greatest opportunities for writing while traveling is the choice of taking the train. Since you don’t need to keep your eyes on the road, you can grab your laptop or yellow pad and write while someone else navigates the rails. Take time to enjoy the scenery and record any moments of inspiration for your next book.
Automobiles. If you are at the wheel during an automobile trip, then writing while driving is not an option. But you can always take advantage of putting a few thoughts down during rest stops or when you pull over to enjoy meals. Taking breaks during long car trips is not only advisable, but it can also make your trip more relaxing and therefore more enjoyable.
Of course, once you arrive at your destination, a great way to maintain productivity is to use that time to catch up on your reading. Pack a few children’s magazines and a couple of those children’s books you’ve intended to read but just haven’t found the time.
You don’t have to overdo it and neglect your family and your fun while on vacation. If you manage to write one paragraph in the morning before the rollercoasters and one in the evening after a stroll on the boardwalk, so much the better. Doing a little each day you can keep your momentum alive and you will feel refreshed for your return home – and for your return back to your normal writing schedule.
Bon Voyage!
