Basilar Migraines, also known as Bickerstaff syndrome, are a very severe type of migraine with intense pain. The migraine pain is usually located at the back of the head and is accompanied by aura (visual disturbances). These visual disturbances include anything from blurry vision, double vision to blindness.
Other symptoms of Basilar Migraine include:
*Vertigo- a feeling of the room is spinning
*Difficulty walking-loss of balance
*Altered or even loss of consciousness
*Decreased hearing
*Vomiting
*Ringing in the ears
*Jerky eye movements
*Slurred speech
*Light sensitivity
This attack of symptoms usually will last 5-60 minutes but have known to last days in some cases. Some people even experience these severe symptoms in succession-several right after another.
Basilar migraines increase a person’s risk of stroke because the areas that these migraines occur (back of the head) are also where aneurysms can occur. So when describing these symptoms to your doctor be prepared to be tested for the possibilities of a stroke since the symptoms are so close. A Cat-Scan and MRI will more than likely be done and in some cases an EEG will also be performed to rule out any seizure possibilities. Once the stroke is ruled out your doctor will be able to prescribe treatment. Verapamil is usually the most prescribed drug of choice when treating basilar migraines. If you are unable to take Verapamil, Inderal is the next choice.
So what can trigger a basilar migraine so severe? Cheese, wine and some common food additives like nitrates found in processed meats are known to be a trigger for basilar migraine sufferers.
For this serious type of migraine it is suggested you seek out a migraine specialist, a neurologist may even be consulted. Your doctor will also suggest all alcohol and cigarette use be stopped as these will place you in a high risk category for paralysis. Birth control pills are also not recommended. The pain associated with basilar migraines is very severe, it is advised you seek medical attention. There are many treatment options available!
