Edy's No Sugar Added Ice Cream

Edy's is well known for their good quality ice cream products. They used to have ice cream specifically labeled low carb. Now they are being more inclusive, and simply calling their products No Sugar Added. Either way, they are good for healthy desserts!

They have a variety of flavors available in this line. There are Butter Pecan, Coffee, Cookie Dough, Cookies 'N Cream, French Vanilla, Fudge Tracks, Mint Chocolate Chip, Neapolitan, Triple Chocolate, Vanilla and Vanilla Bean. I tend to go with the vanilla and add any extra stuff myself. That way I am sure I control exactly the quantity and type of things being added in. Usually for me it's dark chocolate sugar-free chips.

The ice cream is sweetened with both Splenda and sugar alcohols. You might find that odd, but actually different sweeteners act in different ways and sugar alcohols are necessary for certain situations. The end result is that you get 13g of carbs ... minus 2g of fiber and minus 5g of sugar alcohols. That only leaves 6g of net carbs per serving. Not too bad at all!

The ice cream is also gluten free, kosher and nut free for those of you with allergies.

Amazingly this is 75% less sugar than standard ice creams. And you wonder why people gain weight eating normal ice cream! The flavor is just as smooth and creamy as regular ice cream too. You're not sacrificing flavor or texture. You're just eliminating the sugar.

Now this all being said - keep in mind there are sugar alcohols in here. Some people are sensitive to them! They have a laxative effect on people who are not used to them. So start by having a SMALL portion. See how your tummy reacts. If you're like most of us, there won't be any problem at all. But if you are one of those people who gets affected, it's better to know with a small dose.

There are 90 calories per half cup, 3g of fat with 2g of those being saturated. There are no trans fats. You get 10% of your calcium intake here too!

In general, I really like this ice cream. I'm not suggesting you chow down on ice cream all day every day, but if you're in the need of a desserty treat, this is certainly FAR better than the high sugar ice cream varieties!

Compare this to Haagen Daaz vanilla, 1/2 cup serving:

Serving Size: 1/2 Cup (106g)

Total Fat 18g 28%
Saturated Fat 11g 55%
Trans Fat 0.5g

Talk about a difference!!
