The Scene It Games are a totally new style of board games - the DVD game. Players move their pieces along the board, answering trivia questions about movies or shows. Many of the questions are shown on the television screen, accompanied by a clip from a movie or TV show.
The Scene It TV Deluxe Edition is an excellent game that will provide hours of fun for any family or group of friends. It comes with two DVD's that are chock full of questions; it's suggested that you could play the game at least 20 times through without coming up with the same question twice.
The game board is really cool, it folds from the middle so you can have either a small circular board or a large board that looks like three circles. The trivia questions are fun and cover a huge variety of eras and genres of television shows (from Leave it to Beaver to Barney Miller to Battlestar Galactica to Friends). Some of the trivia questions are printed on cards, and some are given through clips of DVD's. Other questions are more like puzzles, shown to you on the DVD screen. Some questions are "all play", where everyone gets a chance to shout out the answer, and some are "my play", when you're on your own.
I really enjoyed this game, but the obvious objection to it is that it sort of defeats the purpose of board games, which some would say is to turn the TV off and enjoy time as a family. However, if your family is fairly healthy with your TV watching habits, you probably don't have anything to worry about playing this game once in awhile. And if your family watches too much TV, well, at least you're incorporating social interaction by playing this game! DVD games are not for everybody, but for people who enjoy playing lots of different styles of games, they can be fun occasionally, as they're so different than any other type of game. There are also numerous versions available, including Harry Potter Scene It, Disney Scene It, and a variety of Movie Scene Its.
