Top Ten English Garden Plants.

If you would like to create that English Garden feel to your plot, then choose some or all of these traditional English Garden plants.
Alternatively you can mix a few in with the plantings you already have to gradually change the feel of your garden.

Remember that these classic English Garden plants will be at their best in early to mid-summer.



  1. Aquilegia or Grannies Bonnets, they come in a variety of pinks and maroons.

  2. Catmint , goes really well under roses or as edging.

  3. Delphiniums
    are one of the most well-known flowers in a traditional English Garden. They have tall upright spikes of flowers in beautiful blues and purples each with a fascinating black eye. They prefer a sunny spot with well drained soil. For best results you will need to stake them.

  4. Foxgloves another lovely tall plants that comes in a range of pastel colours as well as the traditional pinky purple.

  5. Geraniums hardy geraniums are one of the easiest plants to care for.

  6. Lady’s mantle has delicate frothy foliage as well as flowers.

  7. Lavender another traditional plant for an English garden. Use it as edging or with roses, spread your underwear over the bush to dry and it will have the scent of lavender all day!

  8. Peonies Wonderful large blooms in jewel-like colours

  9. Pinks or Dianthus – sometimes known as a gillyflower. There are many varieties; the old fashioned ones have the best perfume. Here are just a few – Dad’s Favourite, Pink Jewel, Queen of Sheba, Houndspool Ruby, Bridal Veil or Joy. All are scented or very scented and enjoy a sunny spot with well drained soil. They grow from 6 to 16 inches and if you have suitable conditions are a must have in your English Garden!

  10. Sweetpeas come in a wonderful range of pastel colours. The old fashioned ones have the best perfume.
