Doves should not be kept in a cage. They will be much happier in a large flight where they can fly, since they do not hop from perch to perch like some of the smaller birds do and they do not climb on the cage bars as many of the parrot species do.
They are very calm birds and this is one of the reasons that they are often used in magician acts - they will stay quiet in a dark spot until they are brought out for the crowd to see. It is usually quite easy to walk right up to a dove and pick him up and he will seldom struggle or try to get away.
