AFC & NFC Championship Previews

With only four teams alive in the NFL, this Sunday we will learn who is headed to the Super Bowl. In the AFC championship game, the San Diego Chargers travel to New England to take on the undefeated Patriots. In the NFC championship game, the New York Giants travel to Green Bay to take on the Packers.

The AFC championship game will be played first at 3:00PM ET on CBS. At 6:30PM ET, FOX will carry the NFC championship game. Currently, the Patriots are favored over the Chargers by 14 points, while the Packers are favored over the Giants by seven points.

The winners of each game will travel to Phoenix to play in Super Bowl XLII, which will take place on February 3rd and will kickoff at approximately 6:18PM ET.

AFC Championship:

San Diego (11-5, 4-4 away)
New England (16-0, 8-0 home)

- Sunday, January 20, 2008 -
3:00 PM ET – CBS

After an undefeated regular season, the Patriots beat the Jacksonville Jaguars last week to advance to the AFC championship game. The Chargers beat the reigning Super Bowl champion Indianapolis Colts on the road last week to advance. The Chargers will again be on the road this week as they try to pull a major upset and eliminate the Patriots.

The good news for the Chargers is it seems that their team is getting healthy. Philip Rivers and LaDainian Tomlinson both practiced this week and are expected to be able to play. Both Rivers and Tomlinson were hurt against the Colts and were unable to play during the fourth quarters. With Rivers (the team's starting quarterback) and Tomlinson (the team's starting running back) healthy, the Chargers at least have a fighting chance.

The bad news for the Chargers is they are about to face perhaps the best team in NFL history. The Patriots have dominated this season with quarterback Tom Brady leading the way. After throwing 50 touchdown passes during the 16 game regular season, Brady had a nearly flawless game against the Jaguars. If he plays up to his capabilities this weekend, the Patriots' offense will be too much for the Chargers to handle.
PREDICTION: Patriots 38, Chargers 14

NFC Championship:

New York Giants (10-6, 7-1 away)
Green Bay (13-3, 7-1 home)

- Sunday, January 20, 2008 -
6:30 PM ET – FOX

The Giants and Packers should be a much closer game. Although the Packers are favored, the Giants are very good on the road and could pull the upset. In fact, the Giants haven't lost on the road since Week 1 and have won two road games in the playoffs already.

The Packers are led by quarterback Brett Favre, who at 38-years-old is having one of his better seasons in his career. Favre will be looking to sling take advantage of a Giants defense which is ultra-aggressive. If Favre can complete a couple of long passes, that might force the Giants to pull back and not play as aggressively.
PREDICTION: Packers 28, Giants 24
