Super Bowl Cocktail Recipes

Stir up these delicious cocktails full of team spirit for Super Bowl Sunday. The Black Cherry Rum Punch is sure to please a crowd of Baltimore Ravens fans while the Golden Hornet, in honor of the San Francisco 49ers, is best shaken one drink at at time. . . but that probably depends on how your team is faring.

Go, team, go!

-------------------------------------------------

Black Cherry Rum Punch

1 liter light rum
1/2 cup 151-proof rum
1/2 cup dark rum
2 17-ounce cans pitted black cherries in heavy syrup (do not drain; use the syrup)
1 cup lemon juice
1/2 cup orange juice
1/2 cup lime juice
1 cup cherry liqueur*
1 cup creme de cassis
2 limes, thinly sliced

1 quart club soda

Pour all spirits, fruit juices, and lime slices in a large punch bowl or pitcher. Stir together well and chill until serving time.

Just before serving, add club soda and stir.

*One of the most popular cherry liqueurs is Peter Heering but any cherry-flavored brandy, liqueur, or schnapps can be substituted.

NOTE: For a festive touch, put a cherry or slice of orange, lime, or lemon in each compartment of an ice tray, fill with water, and freeze. Use these garnished ice cubes in the punch bowl or in individual drink glasses as the punch is served.

-------------------------------------------------

Golden Hornet Cocktail

1 jigger gin
1/2 jigger amontillado sherry*

1/2 jigger Scotch whisky

Garnish: Lemon peel

Pour gin and sherry into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake till shaker is cool to the touch on the outside. Strain and pour into a prechilled cocktail or old-fashioned glass. Float the Scotch on top. Twist the lemon peel to release its oils and drop into the cocktail.

*Amontillado is a medium-dry sherry. Substitutions work just fine as long as sweet or cream sherries are avoided.
