Spas at Sea

Who doesn’t like to be pampered? A day at the spa or a relaxing massage was my first response this season to “what do you want for Christmas?” so why not have one while on vacation? Wherever you choose to go, and for whatever reason, winding down or recharging your batteries may be just what you need, and who says you have to “need” it! If a spa treatment is part of your regular routine at home, you will be happy to continue your treatment onboard. For those who have never stepped foot in a spa before, your next cruise is the perfect time to try.

So how good are the spas on cruise ships? Some are world class. The spa on the new Queen Mary 2 is run by the famous Canyon Ranch, but most spas and salons on cruise ships are run by London based Steiner Leisure. Steiner currently operates spas and salons on over one hundred cruse ships worldwide, and the treatments include a wonderful variety from Europe and the Far East.

Spas on each ship are different, and there is something for everyone. The design of each spa varies with each ship and line however you can be sure that serene surroundings will add to the mood, the Carnival Glory for instance has a Polynesian design theme complete with waterfall, and you will feel relaxed the moment you enter. Some spas are on the top deck offering spectacular views as you are pampered.

Unfortunately a day of pampering onboard is not included in the price of the cruise - how wonderful if it were! The prices are generally a bit more expensive than you would find on dry land, however there is something available in every cruisers budget. It’s quite easy to find out prices beforehand by checking the cruise lines website.

Book your time at the spa soon after you board to get your choice of time. Few will accept bookings before the cruise, however Princess is now allowing passengers on some ships to make reservations before they board. Check with your travel agent when you book your cruise to see if this option is available, it never hurts to ask. It comes down to “the sooner the better”, spa therapies are popular, and you may not be able to get your preferred time if you wait until the last minute.

So you have booked your cruise, you’re looking over the treatments, the names are exotic sounding and you have no idea what to choose or what you may be in for. Don’t be scared away by the mention of Dry Floatation treatments or Thalassotherapy (and you thought you wouldn’t have to learn another language!) The staff is thoroughly trained and will guide you through the array of selections to find what you want, or perhaps need. And if you can’t wait check out the Steiner London website, or the website of your cruise line for an in-depth description of each therapy they provide.

This is the time to live a little – or perhaps a lot – really enjoy yourself. Make the most of your cruise time in every way and be open to new experiences. Be daring! Remember exactly what type of treatment you have, so that you can duplicate it again when you return home. What better way to re-live your vacation memories!
