No Child Without a Smile - Human Rights

"No Child Without a Smile" is the official motto of the organization, "Clowns Without Borders." Clowns Without Borders has one mission: to put a smile on the face of children in areas where laughter and hope and hard to find. In fact, according to their website, Clowns Without Borders, "seeks to improve the psychological conditions in crisis situations bringing humor and laughter through volunteer artist performances as well as workshops with children and with educators."

Clowns Without Borders is a volunteer organization of artists and performers who travel to areas such as conflict zones, disaster areas, centres of crisis, refugee camps--anywhere children are suffering, Clowns Without Borders is there to help children regain their smiles.

Clowns Without Borders has theatrical artists who not only provide entertainment in the form of circus-like performances, but who also provide relief via workshops for children and adults, in order to help them learn ways to cope psychologically with the situational darkness that pervades their lives.

Clowns Without Borders was initially founded in 1993 and since that date has sent expeditions to countries worldwide - Indonesia, Sumatra, Kosovo, Haiti, The Balkans, Thailand, Cambodia ... the list goes on. Clowns Without Borders even performed in the Gulf Coast region of the United States in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Expeditions usually consists of a troupe of 3 or 4 volunteer performers. While this may sound like a small number of performers, each performance usually has an attendance number of 500+ attendees. The performers rely on cross-cultural means to bring humor to their audiences, usually in the form of vaudeville-like shows relying on non-verbal humor.

Clowns Without Borders is a creative organization that understands that recovery from trauma is not simply a physical matter, but a matter of the heart as well.
