Board Games for Younger Children

There is no age requirement to being enjoying board games. The youngest of players can get in on the action of some of these modern and classic board games designed for younger children.

Zimbbos! is an elephant stacking game that comes with all wooden pieces of elephants, special characters, and platforms. Player roll a special to die to see how many elephants they must stack on the pyramid. Zimbbos! is recommended for children as young as three and can be a great exercise in learning to count. Zimbbos! is from the board game company Blue Orange Games.

Animal Express The animals are going on a trip, and it's up to you to help maneuver them into the boat. Animal Express is from the German company Haba. There are four different colors used for the wooden animal pieces and luggage. Create the boat that resembles a matchbox using the cardboard insert and the game box. Players take turns rolling the die and placing animals into the boat. When an animal falls off the boat, the player puts it in from of them. When a player has four animals, he is out of the game. Animal Express is simple and fun. Animal Express (or Tier-Express) is recommended for children who are at least four.

Candyland is a classic children's game that probably springs to mind when thinking of games for younger children. Players take turns drawing a card and then move their playing piece to that color. Candyland comes in the standard game, or you can buy a franchised copy that features your child's favorite character. Candyland, a Milton-Bradley game, is recommended for children age 3-6.

Lucky Ducks Remember the game at the fair where you picked up a yellow duck for a chance to win a prize? Maybe the prize was never that cool but the game was so much fun. Now there's Lucky Ducks by Hasbro. Players take turns trying to find matching ducks that float around a motorized pond. The ducks quack and music plays with this game that apparently has no volume control. The ducks have a colored shape printed on their bottom side. Lucky Ducks is recommended for children three years old.

Hi Ho! Cherry-O is a classic children's game that is a fun exercise in counting. Players try to be the first to pick all their cherries off their tree. Hi Ho! Cherry-O is for children ages 3 to 6 and is a Milton Bradley game.

Memory is another classic game that is either sold as the original Memory game or as a licensed game. You can easily find Memory featuring your child's favorite character. All the cards are laid in rows face down. Players take turn revealing two cards. If those cards do not match, then the player turns them back over. The trick is to remember where you've seen which card when the match is revealed. Memory, a Milton-Bradley game, is for children ages 3 to 6.

Thomas & Friends Mix 'n Match Bingo Game is a modern game by the company Briarpatch. Each child chooses a Bingo board that features 9 squares and takes a stack of colored chips to mark their board. Then players roll three special dice and look for the pattern on their Bingo board. One die features the border color of a picture while another is the background color. The final die features objects that could be on your Bingo card. When a player has three in a row, they win the game. Thomas & Friends Mix n' Match Bingo will help children develop an eye for detail since all three things must be in one square. The bingo game is recommended for children ages 3 and up.

Enjoying a board game knows no age. The youngest members of the family can get in on family game night with a game meant for their age group. Some board games for younger children can be enjoyed by young and old alike. Introducing board games to your children can create fun and happy memories that will last a lifetime.
