•Stability Ball. This is one of the first items I would include. They can be used in numerous ways beginning with basic exercises on the ball. They are also great for Pilates, yoga, weight lifting with dumbbells, and more. Prices start at $19.99. The size of ball you need will effect the price. They are especially great for balancing and core exercises.
•Handheld Dumbbells. Compare sets of dumbbell trying out the grip and how they fit in your hand. I would recommend buying dumbbells in a set. Most sets start at 1 pound and can go up to 15 lb. You will want different weights depending on your workouts and progression as you get stronger. Most sets start at around $25.
•Yoga/Pilates Mat. A good mat can be used for almost any exercise. It is definitely needed for yoga and Pilates but it comes in handy for other modes of exercising too. It helps to keep your stability ball from rolling away from you. It provides cushioning when doing any exercise such as kneeling during weight lifting exercises. Most mats start at around $19.99.
•Resistance Bands. Using resistance bands can most of the benefits as using dumbbells, they are handy when traveling, and you can use them for strength training, Pilates, yoga, etc. They are easy to use, not very expensive, and durable. There are several types of bands such as cords which have handles on each end; latex loop bands; and simple latex bands. The cost of bands varies depending on which type you choose, however the basic bands start around $15 for a set.
•Medicine Ball or Kettleball. Both of these are becoming increasingly popular and will provide you a great strength workout. Some types convert from kettleball to medicine ball by simply removing the handles. As with dumbbells these balls come in different weights. When purchasing look for one that is just a little heavier than one you can lift easily. You will want to be able to grow into the weight of the ball. These can also be bought in sets of differing weights. Most start around $20 for one.
•Foam Roller. These rollers vary widely in design and performance. They can be used therapeutically and for great core exercises. They come in a variety of materials and density. They are great for improving stabilization and balance. You can use them for self massage as the roller provides blood flow to a sore area; and they are help to promote flexibility. Most start around $20.
•Exercise Step Bench. These are really handy when lifting weights but especially for including some cardio into your workout. Most include 3 stepping blocks so you can adjust the height. Be sure you look for one with a non-stick platform. You can get a great low-impact workout with these benches and they are used by professional athletes, beginner exercisers and even physical therapist. Most start out around $40.
