Losing Weight On Vacation

An issue that comes up for most clients during the summer is vacation weightloss. How do you maintain or continue to lose weight while eating out and without your regular exercise routine? It's actually easier than you think. Just follow the vacation diet guidelines below and you'll stay on track with your goals while still enjoying your trip.

1. Pack Lots of Healthy Snacks
Buy snacks at home and pack them in your luggage or get to a grocery store first thing upon arriving. Quick healthy snacks come in handy when fast food is the only option, if you happen to be eating later than planned, or if you are on a budget. Try luna bars, lara bars, unsalted trail mixes, nuts, apples, oranges, baby carrotts, celery, yogurt drinks, protein drinks, and lots of water. Have them between meals to keep energy levels high and to avoid fatigue binges (just remember to take them with you each day!).

2. Plan Your Meals Weeks Ahead
Look at your restaurant options weeks before you leave so you know who has the best choices in the locations that you will be visiting each day. Travel guides, online yellow pages, and even hotel websites list options that fit your budget and your dietary needs. Knowing what's available ahead of time prevents having to settle for gross food that will only make you feel slugish and guilty.

3. Make Healthy Food Choices
You may not always be eating at the healthiest places but there are always good options even at the worst eateries. When deciding on a dish look for the least amount of fat i.e. grilled vs. fried. Stick to natural carbs vs. highly processed ones i.e. potatoes vs. pasta. Drink water or iced tea instead of soft drinks or alcohol. Always choose salad with vinaigrette dressings vs. creamy dressings. And when having dessert cut back on starchy carbs i.e. bread, pasta, potatoes, etc. plus cut back on portion as well.

4. Say No To Peer Pressure
Being on vacation should be fun and should include some diet cheats. The key is to avoid indulging the entire time, especially when there's peer pressure involved. When friends, relatives, or travel companions try to guilt you into cheating just say no thanks and explain that sticking to your plan will help you have more energy for your daily adventures. If that won't work then excuses like food allergies or stomach problems are a great way to get people to stop steering you in the wrong direction.

5. Stick To Part of Your Exercise Routine
Most vacations include a good deal of walking which is a great way to burn calories but you should also make an effort to includine stretching and strength training. One set of squats, pushups, crunches, or downward dog a day will boost metabolism and keep you more true to your diet. It will also make it easier to transition back to your program once you get back from your trip.
