Choosing Eyeglass Frames by Face Shape

Picking eyeglass frames for women that suit your face is easy - picking ones that fit your unique style might take a few trips to the optician, but the extra effort will be worth it.

Get a general idea of the best frames for your face type and then hit the stores armed with these tips. Remember, eyeglass frames are a great way to express yourself.

Eyeglass Frames for Women By Your Face Shape

Round Face

Select frames that make your face appear longer and balance out your features. Rectangular lenses are a good general rule, but make sure the frame isnít too harsh Ė itís all about details. Heavier, chunky frames are great, they also update your style without changing anything else. Think bold and contemporary.

Square Face

Youíll want a pair of frames that soften your strong features without overwhelming the geometry of your face. Try oval and round frames with a lighter frame, gradually increasing the size and chunkiness until you find the perfect fit.

Oblong Face

Oblong faces have a lot of flexibility Ė you can try round, rectangular or square frames. Simply find a pair that you feel balances your look and doesnít add extra length to your features. You have the advantage of being able to wear the less conventional and artistic shapes as well. Feel free to experiment.

Oval Face

If you have an oval shaped face the sky is the limit as to which glasses you can wear. You arenít bound by shape restrictions, style or material, so try as many looks as you like. Cat eye, heavy and chunky, wire or gold Ė the choice is yours.

Heart-shaped Face

Heart shaped faces look balanced with an upswept frame that pulls attention to the eyes and away from the chin. Think cat eye, angled rectangle or any other frame that looks a little "retro" Ė thatís the most feminine and flattering style for you.

Shop Around for a Bargain

Grab a few magazines and search "Celebrity Glasses" online. Youíll find more inspiration and current ideas this way. Save, tear or print your favorite images and bring those with you to the optician or retail store.

You Donít Have to Buy to Try

Just because you tried on the Vogue eyewear or Chanel frames, doesnít mean you have to buy them. Test out the most expensive brands first, and figure out which style and shape you want. Then adjust your expectations according to budget - some upscale frames can cost more than $400 without lenses and you may be able to find something almost identical from a brand of cheap eyeglass frames.

Now that youíve found a look and shape you like, ask your salesperson for as many frames in that style as possible, at all price points. (There are frames in all styles for nearly any budget, so donít think you have to splurge to look great.)

Take a Chance

If you love a look but feel itís too "trendy" or daring for you, those are the glasses you need to buy. Once youíve been wearing your new style for a few weeks, your self-image will adjust.

So donít be shy, your eyeglasses are one of the few accessories youíll wear every day.
