Date Movie

If you don't know by now, "Date Movie" is the newest spoof-a-palooza from some of the minds behind the "Scary Movie" series and "Spy Hard." Alyson Hannigan, the star of the popular "Buffy" television series, stars as Julia, a woman so insecure she doesn't believe she can get a man without drastically changing. She has an intense crush on Grant (Adam Campbell), and to get his attention and hopefully win his affection, she seeks the help of a real-life Cupid. Hitch, this time played by Tony Cox ("Bad Santa") rather than Will Smith, uses methods that are remarkably similar to those on the television show "Pimp My Ride" to remake Julia into someone new.

No movie is safe in this film. "Date Movie" spoofs "Hitch," "Meet the Fockers," "Bridget Jones Diary," "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," "Sweet Home Alabama, The Dukes of Hazard," "Jerry Maguire," "Pretty Woman," "The Wedding Planner," "Monster-In-Law," "Wedding Crashers," "Napoleon Dynamite," "Star Wars," "Say Anything," and "How to Lose a Guy In 10 Days," just to name a few!

Although well over forty movies were spoofed in this film, movies weren't the only gags. Other spoofs included several well-known commercials (i.e. Paris Hilton's infamous burger commercial) and celebrities, including Michael Jackson.

I am a fan of spoof movies; I love "Airplane" and "Naked Gun." I am also fan of gross-out humor; I laughed at "Road Trip" and yes, "Scary Movie." So I was expecting "Date Movie" to make me laugh, but it didn't. A great spoof film will have good jokes, hilarious and relevant spoofs, and a silly, maybe even nonsensical plot. This film had none of those. Perhaps a more accurate title would've been "Bad Date Movie."

From beginning to end, you anticipate laughter, or a moment of giddy hilarity, but it never comes. The majority of spoofs in this film were predictable. There was no discernable plot, which means that you are subjected to an hour and a half of gross, inane jokes that just aren't funny enough. The gross-out humor was just gross and not funny (think cat with diarrhea) and most of the wilder scenes were downright offensive - there were too many fat and gay jokes.

Perhaps you should keep in mind that this film was directed by only two of the writers from the "Scary Movie" series. Two of the writers - and not the director. This film completely misses the funny mark and was a major disappointment.
