Books at the Oscars

I love movies. I love books. I love books made into movies. The Academy Awards combines two things I love most into one event. The Oscars has been a yearly tradition for me since childhood.

Books made into movies are not a new concept. Sometimes movies are better than books and sometimes books are better than movies. And sometimes if done properly movies can add to the reading experience. Once you've read a book you need to look at the movie with an open mind. Only so much of a book can go into a 1 1/2 - 3 hour film so it stands to reason stuff must be cut and altered to make sense.

This year there are an exceptional amount of adaptations represented at the Oscars for various categories. Ten movies highlighted this year are based on fiction. Four of which have already been previously produced into movies. Only one made it into the Best Motion Picture Category. Can you guess which one?

I've divided the adaptations into the following three categories:

* Action (dramatic movies with a little more kick)
- A History of Violence
- War of the Worlds
* Dramatic (character driven stories)
- Brokeback Mountain
- Memoirs of a Geisha
- Pride and Prejudice
- The Constant Gardener
- Tsotsi
* Children's (written for children but always appealing to young and old)
- Charlie & the Chocolate Factory
- Harry Potter, Goblet of Fire
- The Chronicles of Narnia
