Victor Sabino on Hairstyle Trends

In this second part of my interview, Victor Sabino shares his views on hairstyle and hair color trends.
Read the beginning of the interview here.

L.Chapman: Where do you see hairstyle trends going in the US?
V.Sabino: The U.S. always follows European fashion. Couture dictates hair trends through their designs. I see the trends at this time as an open field. Product manufacterers place pressure on platform artists in hair shows to gain the attention of their audience but rarely will any of the styles move
to consumer wear except for Goth followers or semi-punk. I feel the trend will go towards the very natural look. Women with frizzy hair have learned to accept their texture but are still looking for control without the hassle. I believe that simple products that are effective will stimulate hair that can be worn naturally but with dynamic texture and sheen without looking fake. Length doesn't matter right now.

L.Chapman: What do you see in hair color trends?
V.Sabino: I try to encourage those that would do better with darker colors to move in that direction. Eye color plays a big part. If hair color is too close to skin tones, it flattens ones look so make-up must be utilized to create the contrast. Browns with subtleties of low lights and highs is a great look. I am against multiple color weaves (more than 2 or 3 colors) as the colors fade and eventually blend into a muddy mess unless re-woven every 6 weeks. Browns with a touch of cool or warm reds and deep golds give depth and a healthy look.

L.Chapman; For those who don't want to change styles often, is there a classic style that won’t go out of style?

V.Sabino:I think for women with shorter, curly hair a one length bob is a great look if they use the right products to keep hair from exploding. Women with long, curly hair need long layers rather than short to avoid that 80's look. Hair texture governs the design not the hairstyle. It's amazing how you can achieve a great look with minor adjustments to the cut. So many women come in to my salon with the idea that they want to cut off their length because they are getting older ... not true. It's how you carry yourself, how you dress and wear your make-up. If you wear Berkinstocks and long lazy dresses, no make up and pull your hair back in a ponytail, that will age you. BUT if you dress to meet the world, long hair on mature women can be very attractive and sexy. Bobs, inverted bobs, short boy cuts, and fringed cuts are timeless.

Many women try to cover up areas on their face. For example, women that don't like their necks try to keep their hair longer. Bad idea! Eyes gravitate to areas where there is more hair. Instead of wearing hair longer, create drama around the eyes.

L.Chapman: Great advice! Many of our readers are from very small towns without access to larger hair salons. What suggestions do you have for a woman who wants a hairstyle that is up to date and that is right for them?

V.Sabino: First, contact a salon distributor in their area and ask to speak to one of their sales reps. The reps visit salons weekly and know who the best stylists are even in a small town. Take in a picture, they speak a thousand words but again, finding a good stylist to perform the task is essential. Ask someone who has a great style where they get their hair cut. Make sure that the person they are asking has the same texture, density and coarseness or fineness as they do. So many women get caught up into the style rather than what is best for their hair type, this is a big mistake. Take in quite a few pictures so the stylist can recommend what is best for their hair. Sometimes its great to take ideas from each picture to blend them into one look. Remember, there is NO perfect style for anyone but, there is a perfect stylist that has great training for everyone if they search in the ways I suggested.

L.Chapman: Thank you for taking the time to chat with me, Mr. Sabino. I’m sure my readers will be very interested.
