With only a short amount of time before the election, there is hardly a day that will go by where you will hear about presidential candidate Barack Obama. But what about the wife of the man who could potentially make history? In the book “Michelle” by Liz Mundy, the reader gets a intimate and revealing look into the marriage of this history making couple.
As we read “Michelle” we get a picture of a warm, empathic, sometimes blunt, sharp tongued and sometimes demanding woman. As we learn more about the marriage of these two very dynamic people, we learn how much Barack and Michelle complement one another. Michelle is an avid list maker and is very organized and can be intimidating. Barack one the other hand is introspective and a charmer. At home Barack may not pick up his socks but he will always dream big and shoot for the sky.
Like many marriages and relationships where each person has a demanding career and children to take care of, the relationship has been strained at times. The relationship has been strained to the point where the Senator had to convince her to support his political aspirations.
It is no surprise then that Michelle has sometimes regretted her decision to support her husband when it came to his political career Michelle has taken much skepticism from American voters about her husband and his push for the White House
Michelle Obama’s story is as intriguing as her husband’s. She was raised on the Chicago south side and is the daughter of a stay at home mom and a father who was a city worker. She was able to attend Princeton after her attendance was the subject of an angry argument about affirmative action. She later attended Harvard law school. She enjoyed working pro bono for the poor while many of her peers were busy trying to earn awards.
As Mrs. Obama’s career continued, she worked as a corporate lawyer and then left that position to work with community leaders.
Michelle Obama is a very modern woman but also likes classic TV such as The Brady Bunch and The Dick Van Dyke Show.
Liza Mundy’s portrait of Mrs. Obama draws from interview with the potential first lady and over one hundred people
Mundy captures the complexity of this remarkable woman and the remarkable life she has lived. The book takes a serious look at Michelle’s politics and struggles. The biography also acknowledges the twenty first century status of the spouse of the president.
